Volley No. 3 - Autumn Newsletter - October 2010
September has provided a fitting end to a very successful season of tennis at the Club. Our annual Singles’ and Doubles’ Championships took place under perfect Wimbledon weather conditions and produced some excellent competitive tennis. There will be photographs on the website shortly but congratulations go to our winners:
|Men’s Champion:||Myles Fletcher||Runner-up:||Jonathan Bissett|
|Ladies’ Champion:||Wendy Smith||Runner-up:||Jill Dixon|
|Doubles’ Champions:||Wendy Smith and Adrian Barton||Runners-up:||Fiona Haward and James Hunt|
Our league teams also enjoyed a very good season, with the Men’s A and B teams winning their respective divisions and gaining promotion. The Ladies’ and Mixed teams consolidated their league positions against some tricky opposition. Our junior teams also enjoyed success –U16 Girls and the U13 Girls both won their respective divisions and the U13 Boys came a creditable 3rd in their first year in division 1. Congratulations to all our teams who have represented the club so well. Winter league matches are now underway and details of home matches and other court bookings are displayed in the window of the clubhouse.
Club sessions continue as normal throughout the year – Tuesdays from 6.30pm and Saturdays from 2pm.
On Saturday, 9 October, there will be a senior/junior tournament in place of the normal afternoon club session. If you have not already entered, you have until Monday 4 October to put your name down. Each junior will be paired with a senior for the tournament. Seniors should contact Wendy Smith on or 01395 268823 and juniors should contact Fiona Haward on or 01395 276764. The tournament in May was enjoyed by all who took part, so why not join in this time?
There is a small amount of court and general maintenance necessary before the winter starts and we will be holding a maintenance morning on Sunday 24 October, starting at 10 am. Please come along if you can - it would spread the load and get the jobs done quickly.
British Tennis Membership
If you are not already a member, please read this and consider joining. There is no cost to individuals and, as our entitlement to Wimbledon tickets is based on the number of British Tennis Members we have (and not on the number of club members), an increase in numbers should give us access to more tickets. Even if you don’t want to go to Wimbledon yourself, you could help someone who would like the opportunity. We currently have about 50 British Tennis Members out of around 200 club members. Registration can be done online (log on to www.lta.org.uk/BritishTennisMembership and follow the instructions). Juniors can join too. Don’t forget to affiliate yourself to Lympstone Tennis Club! If you prefer, there are forms available in the clubhouse, which you can complete and send off. Next year’s Wimbledon allocation will be based on the number of British Tennis Members we have at 30 November 2010, so please don’t delay! For further information and/or any help, phone Jill on 224774.
We are hoping to organise a number of social events over the winter, including a Christmas lunch, mulled wine and mince pies, tennis at the Exmouth Indoor Centre and a skittles evening. More details as dates are fixed. However, the events can only go ahead if we have sufficient members who commit in advance as we are required to guarantee a minimum number when making a booking.
