Volley #2 - Spring Newsletter - March 2010
At the recent AGM, we said goodbye to Sue Parks, who has been a committee member for several years and welcomed Fiona Haward and Kevin Bentley. Members approved the proposed modest increase in subscriptions to £50 for seniors, £75 for couples; student membership remains at £25 and juniors at £12. You will receive a renewal form with this newsletter; please renew promptly to help our Treasurer. Spare forms are available in the Committee Room during club sessions
With longer days almost upon us, we hope everyone will enjoy some of the activities the Club has on offer – both on and off the court. Here are some forthcoming events for your diary!
Junior coaching starts on Saturday 17 April at 9.30 am when James will be sorting the children into groups for the 10 weeks’ coaching programme. Numbers are restricted because of court safety and places will be allocated on a “first come” basis. Existing members can renew their membership and pay for the coaching in advance by returning the form and fee to Andrew Lorenc. The cost for the 10 sessions will be £30 (plus £12 membership). The club has funds available to provide some financial support to juniors so please approach any of the club’s officers, in confidence, if cost is an issue.
Senior Coaching A 5 week course will start on Thursday 22 April. Session times are 6.30-8pm for less experienced and 8-9.30 pm for more experienced players. The cost to members will be £25. Phone Suki on 269989 for more details and/or to book a place. If you are unable to make all the dates, you may offer your place to another member for that session. We aim to be flexible and to encourage as many as possible to participate.
Senior tournaments will be held on the following Saturdays: 5 June, 10 July and 14 August, starting at 2pm and followed immediately afterwards by a BBQ. Bring your own meat/cutlery/drink and a salad or pudding to share. Don’t worry if you don’t have a doubles partner – pairings are allocated on the day. In the unlikely event of poor weather, we will postpone to the following week. Our annual Singles and Doubles championships will take place on Sunday 12 September with a lunchtime BBQ.
“Caribbean Cruise” Disco
“Caribbean Cruise” Disco Saturday 22 May. Where else can you get a cruise ticket for £12? This is the club’s major fundraising event, so please book the date in your diary NOW! Tickets will be available very soon from committee members. Come on your own or make up a group and dress up if you want (prizes awarded for best outfit).
We are awaiting allocation of our tickets for this year and will be contacting members who are also British Tennis Members to invite them to take part in the ballot. If you want to check your eligibility, contact Jill on 224774.
Court safety and unsupervised children
There have been several instances recently where children have been playing unsupervised on the courts, sometimes in inappropriate footwear. For reasons of insurance and children’s safety, juniors are not permitted to have a court key and we would ask parents not to allow children to go unaccompanied to the tennis courts. In order to ensure that only members use the club facilities, we propose to reintroduce shoe tags for juniors. These can be attached to shoelaces and must be worn whenever juniors are on court. Anyone not displaying a tag may be challenged at any time. We ask for your cooperation in this, to make the club safer for all.
With a busy league season starting in April, a list of dates when the courts are booked for matches will be posted on the website www.lympstonetc.co.uk and on the notice boards at the club. This year we have 4 senior teams and 3 junior teams representing Lympstone in matches, so we wish them all well. Supporters are always welcome courtside. A reminder that general club sessions are held at the following times:
Club Sessions – Tuesdays (from 6.30pm) and Saturdays (2pm to 5pm)
Junior Coaching – Saturday mornings (8am – 2pm)
Senior Coaching – Thursday evenings (6.30 to 9.30 pm)
One court is regularly booked on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9.30 – 11.30 am by different groups, but the other court is free. The courts are available for public play, but it is essential for guests to complete a Visitors Form and pay the appropriate fee, otherwise they are not insured. Fees are £4 per adult per hour or £10 per court for non-members, with juniors and students half price. The correct footwear must be worn to protect the court surfaces. The club is unable to offer a full booking system but non-members wishing to play may contact any of the committee members listed on the courtside notice board, who will make the necessary arrangements.
Village Hall Update
Members may like to know that Phase 1, including the new Bar and new tables, has been completed and, with the Phase 2 target of £75,000 almost achieved, the planned works to replace the roof will be carried out over the summer. The work will be carried out during the day, leaving evenings and weekends clear, but there will be scaffolding and some disruption is inevitable. Please be patient, the new roof is much needed and will be well worth the inconvenience. The Village Hall Management Committee has thanked the Tennis Club for its fundraising efforts, which have donated over £1,100 to the funds through three Bridge evenings. We are especially grateful to Suki Commin, Marleen Johnson and Normal Exelby who have worked hard to organise these events on our behalf and they in turn wish to thank all those who took part.
Club news and information is distributed by email to keep costs down. Please ensure we have your correct details. Any changes should be noted on the membership renewal form. Printed copies are available on request and a current copy will be displayed on the Club notice boards, as well as on the website.
